Jolanda Wassenaar has a special eye for detail. Strolling through Mediterranean villages she is especially intrigued by old, peeling walls. What is the story behind all those layers of paint and posters that have hung there? How many times a painter has gone over it with his brush? Once back in her studio her paintings emerge intuitively without a prior plan. For Jolanda It works like a meditation, she puts all her thoughts and feelings on a blank canvas. About her working method she says, “I apply the acrylic paint mainly with old credit or other cards, these are flexible and this is how I create the skin of my painting. I apply many layers of paint, sometimes combined with marble dust, linen, rope and paper. I want to create a layering in which I can scratch and polish later on in the process.” Jolanda’s paintings are mixed media works in clay, pebble and white tones accented with darker colors, such as browns and black. Adding graphic lines in ink and charcoal will give her paintings the distinctive signature.
